Tried everything? This one trick might be the game-changer
Mar 18, 2025Ever feel like you’ve tried everything to calm your ring nerves—deep breathing, visualization, positive affirmations—but the anxiety still creeps in?
What if I told you there’s one overlooked trick that might finally make a difference? Actually, let’s make it three.
The key is finding what clicks for you. So, here are three powerful strategies—pick one and give it a real shot at your next trial.
1. The “Name 5 things” trick
Ever notice how nerves pull you out of the moment? This trick pulls you back in.
Right before you step to the line, try this:
- Name 5 things you see
- Name 4 things you hear
- Name 3 things you feel
- Name 2 things you smell
- Name 1 thing you taste
It’s a sensory reset that stops overthinking and brings you into the now. Because if your brain is busy noticing details, it can’t be spiraling into “what-ifs.”
2. Step into your confident alter ego
High-level athletes and performers often use an alter ego to step into their most confident selves.
Imagine a version of you who is completely calm, in control, and ready. What would they think, say, or do? Now, become them.
Give this confident persona a name—something fun but powerful. Maybe you become Zen Handler or The Ice Queen or Sasha Fierce when you step into the ring. The more you embody this version of yourself, the more natural confidence becomes.
3. Own your walk to the start line
Body language influences your mindset. If you walk to the line looking nervous—head down, shoulders hunched—your brain picks up on that.
Instead, try this:
- Stand tall, shoulders back
- Walk with calm confidence
- Breathe deeply and evenly
Even if you don’t feel confident yet, your body will start sending signals to your brain that you are. It’s a simple shift that can have a massive impact.
Try one & see what sticks
Pick one of these strategies and use it at your next trial. The smallest mental shifts can create the biggest breakthroughs.
Which one are you going to try first? Let me know—I’d love to hear how it works for you!
