Mindset on display in Paris

big events mindset Jul 30, 2024

Since the torch arrived to the Seine, my productivity has been in the proverbial tank. I've downloaded two apps, watched a lengthy post on the rules of Rugby 7s, and rolled out of bed early only to move to the couch in front of the TV. I am an Olympics addict.

Like the lifeguard at the swim venue, my input on any sport is useless. I'm soaking up all the mindset BTS (behind the scenes) I can find, watching athletes approach their respective starts and listening intently to their post-competition interviews. Oh, and then there are the stories of what they overcame! Examples of mental toughness and grit abound, with each athlete being more fierce than the last. Inspiration is everywhere.

Here are some of my favorite observations:

Athletes are taking in the experience while also seriously preparing for their sport. One male athlete has made at least a dozen TikToks about his love of the chocolate muffins in the Olympic Village (IYKYK), and other athletes are getting strategic about their pin-trading efforts. They understand their ability to balance preparing for the biggest moment of their lives - perhaps seconds! - with taking it all in. They trust in their skills and commit to their rituals without missing the moment.

If you listen to any interview, they only talk about the process - not the outcome. Do they want to win? Silly question. But they know that without execution, there is no winning. The athletes know they don't control the outcome, just their performance. Hot weather and bad calls don't distract them from their process goals.

Some might argue it's the cameras, but I genuinely believe the athletes are displaying great sportsmanship, especially considering the competitive environment - after all, this is a once-in-a-lifetime moment for most. I see more lifting each other up without tearing one another down, even with all the emotions at stake.

Whether vying for a podium or hoping to finish a novice title, we can all improve our mindset. After all, our mindset is just a sum of very learnable skills we can practice. And if you need a little inspiration, look around - at your local trial or the Olympic coverage. If you'll excuse me, I must go down an obscure Olympic rabbit hole.
