Get your spark back!
Jan 28, 2025Fall Back in Love with Dog Sports
There was a time when you couldn't wait to train. When stepping into the ring filled you with excitement instead of dread. When you and your dog felt like an unstoppable team.
But lately? Not so much. Maybe you're questioning why you even started. Maybe your goals feel… empty. Maybe you're even wondering if it's time to walk away.
First—take a breath. These feelings are normal. No matter how much they love the sport, every handler will go through a phase of doubt, exhaustion, or burnout. The key is recognizing that this is just a phase, not the end of the road.
So, how do you get your spark back?
1. Reconnect with Your "Why"
Think back to the very beginning. What made you fall in love with this sport? Was it the bond with your dog? The thrill of competition? The joy of learning together?
We often get so wrapped up in outcome goals that we forget what brought us here in the first place. Shift your focus away from titles, scores, and rankings for a moment. Instead, ask:
- What part of training do I actually enjoy?
- When was the last time I laughed with my dog in a session?
- What moments make this sport feel fun?
Your "why" may have evolved over time—and that's okay. But reconnecting with your core reason for being here can reignite your passion.
2. Shift from Pressure to Play
Sometimes, the pressure to perform sucks the fun right out of the sport. If every training session feels like a grind, it's time to lighten things up.
Try this: Take a few days (or even weeks) and focus on pure play. No drills, no structured exercises—just you and your dog having fun. Run through tunnels, play chase, teach a silly trick, let go of expectations.
By shifting your energy, you remind yourself why you love working with your dog in the first place.
3. See Your Journey as an Evolution, Not a Destination
If you've hit your big goals and now feel lost, that's not a sign to quit—it's a sign you're ready to evolve.
Instead of asking, What now?, ask:
- What new skills can I develop?
- How can I challenge myself in a different way?
- Is there a new venue, event, or format I've never tried?
Your journey isn't over; it's just shifting. The best handlers keep learning, adjusting, and finding new ways to grow.
4. Give Yourself Permission to Step Back (Without Guilt)
If you're truly burned out, forcing yourself to push through won't help. Sometimes, the best way to get your passion back is to take a break. That doesn't mean you're quitting—it just means you're allowing yourself the space to recharge.
Whether it's a few weeks away from trialing, a change in training focus, or even just a mental shift from "must achieve" to "must enjoy," trust that stepping back can actually bring you closer to what you love.
Losing your passion doesn't mean it's gone forever. It just means you need to reconnect with what makes this sport special for you. Whether it's shifting your goals, embracing play, or taking a well-earned pause, know this: Your love for this sport is still there. You just have to find it again.
